Hi everyone,
I am Elyse Gardner. I am a junior at UW-Milwaukee, and am from Wausau originally. I am an education major.

It took me awhile to think of a project to do, but I have finally decided that I am going to design a little recycling program for the 4k-Headstart and the Before/After school program I used to work at. I am still in the process of designing it and coming up with all the ideas though! I am definitely open to any suggestions anyone may have!

Great idea! Are you thinking

Great idea! Are you thinking of helping to set up recycling at the setting, or will you focus on helping children learn about recycling - or both? I can share some resources to help you, let me know which kinds of information would be useful.

I was thinking I would focus

I was thinking I would focus more on teaching them about recycling. What they can and cant and why they should. Resources would be great!
Thanks!

The WI DNR's recycling

Submitted by WLW Mentor on Tue, 09/29/2009 - 10:06am.

The WI DNR's recycling education booklets and a video can be found here: http://dnr.wi.gov/org/aw/wm/publications/index.html#recycling - scroll down to the "Education" heading. You could also look for field trip opportunities in your area such as the programs offered in SE Wisconsin by Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful - http://www.kgmb.org/school_programs.html.

When helping people learn a new behavior, an important part is giving them practice in actually doing it. I like to bring a big bunch of clean trash (at least 1 item per child) and have kids take turns putting items in the correct bins. I'll keep an eye out for more Head Start recycling education ideas.

Also, think about how you will measure results of your project - will you look for a change in what children understand? Or a change in recycling in the classroom?

Keep me posted! - Chris Beimborn
