Who I Am, And My Challenge Idea.
Hi everyone, my name is Kayla Raner. I am a freshman this year, and I have yet to chose major. So far I am enjoying my first year of school.
I was having a hard time thinking of ideas for this project, however I finally thought of one I really like.
At first, my idea was to figure out a way to get more people in my neighborhood to learn about recycling and to get them to start. I told my mom about my idea and as I was talking to her, thought of an even better project. My mom is an english teacher at DIAL High School and I thought maybe I could get her school to start recycling, but I also thought it was a long-shot because I just figured most schools already recycle. I asked her about it anyways and found out that her school doesn't recycle.
My plan is to do some research about recycling in schools, maybe find some video clips about recycling, and make a video explaining to the staff why the school should start recycling and how they can help. My mom said I can come to school with her on a Friday sometime and present the video to the teachers during their weekly meeting. She also has a class with some students who were just asking about recycling at their school. I think these kids can help spread the word about recycling to other students in the school. I will make flyers with information about recycling on it, so that all the students will know what I am trying to do and how they can all help.
My final goal is to have small recycling bins in every classroom, larger ones in the lunch room (similar to the ones on campus at UWM), and possibly and outdoor dumpster for the recyclables.
How I'm going to do this:
1. Research information about recycling.
2. Go to school with my mom and talk to the janitorial staff about
what they currently do with the garbage, and if there is any
recycling going on at all, also if they have a dumpster for
recyclables or not.
3. Put a video presentation together for the staff (and possibly
some students) to view.
4. Find out how to get the bins needed and how many are needed.
5. Create flyers to pass out to students.
6. Visit the school again and show the staff my video.
7. Go to the school while students are there and pass out flyers
to as many as possible (with the help of some students from
one of my mom's classes).
8. Hopefully by the end of this, the school will be recycling!
I am very excited about this project, and I think it will really make a difference. It isn't something that will just stop when I'm done with this assignment, it will continue on even after I'm done.

School Recycling
Hi:
There are a number of us in the area that specialize in school recycling assistance. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I'd recommend several websites for good recycling information, including:
www.waukeshacounty.gov/recycling
http://recyclemorewisconsin.org/
The Wisconsin DNR also has a Green & Healthy Schools program.
I'm not familiar with DIAL.
Good luck with your project!

School recycling teaches an important habit so your efforts will go a long way. Don't forget to take stock of what's going on now; that way you'll be able to see how your actions make a difference. If the school is missing its recycling dumpster, I can help you solve that problem. I like your well-thought-out plan!
